KP Money Boards

Because money is an application of the base-ten number system, KP Money Boards use the ten-frame to help students understand the relationships among bills and coins.

Money Boards consist of three card-stock Dollar Board pages and one card stock-page each of $.25, $.10, $.05, and $.01 for cut-outs.

  • Students use the Dollar Board as a puzzle board on which to arrange puzzle-piece coins in various combinations to model different combinations of coins equivalent to $1.00. This example shows one way to make $.78.

  • They learn how to make change from $1.00 by filling empty spaces with puzzle-piece coins. The change is $.22 for a purchase made with $.78.

  • They use coin cards as puzzle boards on which to arrange other coins in combinations that demonstrate amounts equivalent to the coin value of the board. The example shows two coin combinations equivalent to a quarter.
