Counting to 10

The ten-frame has long been used as an organizational framework for numbers 0-10. Counting tiles onto the ten-frame reinforces the meaning of counting: using one-to-one correspondence to assign a number to each counted object and recognizing that the last number in the count represents the total number of objects.

Students count tiles onto the ten-frame (top row-bottom row, left-to-right) so that each quantity presents a unique spatial identity that is easily memorized. The configuration of tile-quantities on a ten-frame is a central idea in teaching understanding of the entire base-10 system.
